“For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was Light and high Beauty forever beyond its reach.”
― J.R.R. Tolkien, The Return of the King
Light cannot really be thought of without the knowledge of the shadows. Without the bad news…. we can’t really grasp the need for the good news. Our culture today loves light and shadows. Instagram and other forms of fun social media art show our love of playing with light and shadows — watching the contrast. One thing I have noticed is that even ugly, broken, old objects can appear beautiful with the right direction and balance of the light.
I love light. I love opening my window curtains in the morning, and letting it stream in the dark room. Even just the teeniest ray of light consumes the darkness.
But, the fact remains…. there is either darkness, or there is light. They are two complete opposites.
Light guides. Darkness keeps the path hidden.
Light can be reflected. Darkness has no stimulation.
Light warms. Darkness is cold.
Light illuminates. Darkness confuses.
Light overwhelms the darkness…. and the darkness is no longer. John 1:5
